Abrazo Sofia Hotel, Bulgaria

Exploring Bulgaria: A Stay in Sofia

During this trip to Bulgaria, I visited several cities, with the capital, Sofia, serving as my transit hub for sightseeing. I chose to stay for three nights at Hotel Abrazo Sofia, conveniently accessible by metro. While researching Sofia, I decided to take it slow—spending three nights in the city, planning a visit to a monastery the next day, and a snow-filled adventure in a national park the day after. Beyond these major attractions, I left the rest of my itinerary open to spontaneity.

After a long journey from Istanbul, we finally arrived in Sofia. Stepping into Hotel Abrazo Sofia, my travel companions couldn’t help but exclaim, “Wow!”—a clear sign of approval. The reception area, though compact, was warm and inviting. The front desk staff were exceptionally friendly and helpful, answering all our questions with patience. I even asked them to call the tour company for our early morning excursion the next day, and they handled it seamlessly, ensuring everything was confirmed. Their hospitality made our stay even more enjoyable and stress-free.

As soon as we entered the hotel, we were greeted by plush, comfortable sofas in a spacious lobby. While I handled the check-in process, my friends took a moment to relax and unwind. A large screen on the wall played a promotional video about the hotel, adding to the ambiance. My friends couldn’t help but comment, “This place has such an exotic charm!”

Walking through a hallway, we discovered a restaurant that also served as the breakfast area. It was around 4 PM, yet the space was still bustling with guests. We later learned that hotel guests could enjoy hot coffee, beverages, and tea at any time of the day—a wonderful perk! After settling into our rooms, we quickly made our way back down to sip a warm drink and recharge before exploring the city.

Vera and I were assigned rooms on different floors. When she and her companions entered their room, they immediately noticed a large double bed instead of the twin beds I had originally booked. They informed me right away, and I rushed down to the front desk to have it sorted out. The hotel staff responded promptly, sending housekeeping to adjust the bedding. Within minutes, everything was perfectly arranged, ensuring a comfortable stay for the next few nights.

Our room featured two elegantly designed single beds with plenty of space—large enough for both my roommate and me to fully open our 29-inch suitcases on the floor. Each bed had a personal reading light, perfect for scrolling on the phone before sleep. The room was also well-equipped with bath towels and hand towels.

However, there were a couple of minor drawbacks. Our room faced a main road, making it somewhat noisy at night (I used earplugs to sleep). Additionally, the hotel had a central heating system, meaning we couldn’t adjust the temperature inside the room. I found myself wearing just a heat-tech top indoors, as European hotels in winter tend to keep the heating on full blast!

One of the highlights was the bed—it was firm, just the way I like it, and even the pillows were on the firmer side, which suited my sleeping preferences perfectly. A big plus! However, in support of eco-friendly practices, the hotel did not provide disposable slippers, toothbrushes, or toothpaste, so guests need to bring their own essentials.

I chose to stay at Hotel Abrazo Sofia because I loved its minimalist design. (Though, after booking, I came across another hotel that looked even more stunning—so for my last night in Sofia, I quickly made a reservation there!) The room was beautifully arranged, creating a cozy and relaxing atmosphere, making my three-night stay truly enjoyable.

This trip to Bulgaria was quite spontaneous, and sometimes, after finishing my itinerary for the day, I would return to the hotel for a short rest before heading out again. That’s why I tend to be pickier when selecting accommodations compared to others. For me, a hotel is more than just a place to sleep—it’s an essential part of the travel experience.

The desk in our room was filled with an array of tempting, pay-as-you-go snacks—practically inviting guests to indulge! One unexpected perk of the cold weather? The chilled drinks in the minibar didn’t seem appealing at all (haha!).

Left: A vertical wooden panel with a few hooks serves as an open-style wardrobe—such a space-saving and practical design! I loved how convenient it was to hang my coat immediately upon returning to the room.

Right: A wardrobe with glass doors housed extra blankets, a hairdryer, and hangers. With the heating system running in European hotels, hand-washed clothes dried surprisingly fast when hung inside the wardrobe.

The bathroom featured a spacious, separate shower area that was impeccably clean—something I truly appreciated.

On the right, you can see the heated towel rack, though I used it to hang my heat-tech tops, innerwear, and leggings instead. By morning, everything was completely dry! I absolutely love the heated towel racks in European hotels—such a game-changer for winter travel.

After checking into our room and taking a well-deserved rest, it was time to head out. My roommate, equipped with an internal foodie radar, took charge of finding a great restaurant, while Vera, our designated Google Maps navigator, led the way.

Stepping out of the hotel, we were greeted by the crisp, chilly air. Sofia’s streets weren’t exactly bustling, but they carried a certain raw, weathered charm—an atmosphere that I found surprisingly appealing.

Good morning!Sofia!

Arriving in Bulgaria means an endless supply of yogurt! From breakfast to dinner, many dishes incorporate this world-famous Bulgarian yogurt, which is even said to be one of the secrets to longevity. I didn’t hold back and started indulging in yogurt from the very first meal. Even Vera, who wasn’t a big fan of yogurt before, fell in love with it after visiting Bulgaria!

Final Thoughts: The location of Hotel Abrazo Sofia was decent, but being close to a main road, it was surprisingly noisy—even for Vera, who usually sleeps well. I gave her some sleep supplements I had prepared, and she said she slept much better during the last two nights.
