After spending a few days exploring Amsterdam, I discovered that this canal-woven city is filled with fascinating stories and rich culture. From Jewish history to the tulip mania, the famous Red Light District, and legalized cannabis, Amsterdam has so much to offer. The city is also home to world-class museums, including those dedicated to the Dutch master Vincent van Gogh. I even had the chance to experience the vibrant King’s Day celebration, an annual event that turns the city into a sea of orange festivities. Amsterdam amazed me with its joyful atmosphere, creativity, lush greenery, and high level of inclusivity, making it one of my favorite cities that I can’t wait to revisit.
This Amsterdam travel guide is designed to help visitors quickly get an overview of the city and plan their trip with ease.
Amsterdam Transportation: Getting There and Getting Around
- Direct Flights from Taiwan to Amsterdam
Taiwan currently offers direct flights to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, operated by China Airlines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. For our trip, we first flew to Vienna and transferred to Berlin, traveling across several European countries before making Amsterdam our final stop. From there, we took a direct China Airlines flight back to Taiwan.

- International Trains: Easy Cross-Border Travel
Located in Western Europe, the Netherlands shares borders with Belgium and Germany, making it well-connected by an extensive European rail network. Travelers can easily cross borders by train using a Eurail Pass or purchasing single-country and point-to-point tickets. The photo shows our journey on the Dutch Railways (NS) from Amsterdam to the picturesque village of Giethoorn.

Cross-Border Buses: A Budget-Friendly Way to Travel Europe
Europe is home to several low-cost bus companies, offering significantly cheaper fares than trains. For budget travelers, taking buses across Europe is a great way to explore the continent without breaking the bank.
On this particular travel day, we journeyed from Brussels, Belgium, to Giethoorn, Netherlands, using multiple modes of transportation—subway, cross-border bus, train, and local bus. It was a long and tiring journey, but the experience was unforgettable.
Here’s our route:
Brussels Novotel → Subway to the bus station → Cross-border bus to Rotterdam, Netherlands (disembarked as the bus continued to The Hague) → Bus from Rotterdam to Amsterdam Schiphol Airport → Train from Schiphol to Steenwijk → Bus No. 70 to Giethoorn.
Best Seasons to Visit Amsterdam
The best time to visit Amsterdam is from June to August when the weather is pleasantly warm. The city’s canals shimmer under the bright summer sun, creating an unforgettable sight. While summer attracts more tourists, it only adds to the city’s vibrant charm. Every passing moment in Amsterdam feels effortlessly romantic.
We visited Amsterdam in late April when the weather was unpredictable and quite chilly. However, we were fortunate to witness the breathtaking tulip bloom and experience the lively King’s Day celebrations. The beautiful scenery and festive atmosphere made up for the lingering winter chill.

Bike Rentals in the Netherlands
The Netherlands is one of the most bike-friendly countries in the world. Locals use bicycles for everything—from commuting to shopping—making cycling an integral part of daily life. With so many bikes on the streets, the country even has special bike parking areas. Visitors who want to join in the fun can easily rent bikes for short-term use, but be aware that Dutch bikes are often designed for taller riders, so you might feel like a hobbit on a giant’s bike!
OV-fiets (web): Similar to Taiwan’s YouBike, this bike rental system is available to OV cardholders. However, it’s restricted to members, so it may not be the most convenient option for casual tourists.
oBike: Originating in Singapore, this global bike-sharing system is also available in the Netherlands. Rental costs are €0.25 for 15 minutes, offering a flexible and affordable way to explore the city.
Guesthouse Rentals: During our stay in Giethoorn, we rented bikes from our guesthouse for a scenic day trip around the village. Cycling allowed us to visit many places that are too far to reach on foot, and it was a delightful, leisurely experience.
公車Buses (web)
Amsterdam’s main attractions are quite concentrated, so taking the bus isn’t often necessary (we only used it once during our visit). However, the city has around 30 bus routes, and it’s worth checking if a bus can take you directly to your destination. Traveling by bus can offer a different, more local perspective of the city and provide a unique experience beyond the usual sightseeing.
Accommodation in Amsterdam
During our visit to the Netherlands, we happened to arrive on King’s Day (Koningsdag), and the hotel prices in Amsterdam were absolutely outrageous. A night at the Ibis Hotel was going for around 7,000 TWD (yikes)! We were so stunned, we seriously considered just flying back to Taiwan. After a long search, we finally found a great option in the city center—ClinkNOORD, a youth hostel with private bathrooms. The location was fantastic, the prices were reasonable, and we quickly booked it with our credit cards to avoid missing out!
ClinkNOORD was originally a laboratory building from the 1920s, but it has since been transformed into a vibrant and unique hostel with character. It’s the perfect spot for those looking for a blend of history, style, and affordability.

Prices and Currency in the Netherlands
The Netherlands uses the Euro (€) as its official currency.
From the moment we started booking our accommodations, we could already feel the high cost of living—yes, the Netherlands is undeniably an expensive destination. To give you a clearer picture:
A Big Mac meal at McDonald’s costs around €9.5 (NT$315)
A one-way bus ticket: €3.5 (NT$115)
A seafood dinner: €83.4
Two hot dogs: €6
Admission to the Anne Frank House: €19
Entrance to Keukenhof Gardens: €59
A French-style meal: €45.5
Sending a package via post office: €10.8
Dining at the Van Gogh Museum: €37.5
Transport is pricey, food even more so, and accommodation doesn’t come cheap either. The Netherlands is the kind of place where just breathing feels expensive—but it’s all part of the experience.
Many people say, “The Netherlands is Europe’s culinary desert!” But is that really true?
During our stay in the Netherlands, we dined at several restaurants—and honestly, we found the food quite delicious! (Or maybe I’m just not picky?) One of the highlights was a seafood restaurant where we treated ourselves to a lavish lunch—it was absolutely worth it. We also enjoyed an elegant French dinner one evening that totally exceeded our expectations.
Dutch cheese, in particular, is exceptional. I even brought several blocks home to pair with red wine—couldn’t resist!
That said, we missed out on trying a few iconic dishes like raw herring and Dutch pancakes, but that just gives us a reason to come back.

Language in the Netherlands
The official language of the Netherlands is Dutch. Impressively, around 98% of the population speaks fluent English—and it’s true! I once met a Dutch woman in Tuvalu, and her English was impeccable.
For travelers, this means you can comfortably explore the Netherlands using English without any major language barriers. However, friends who have moved there for work or long-term stays say that learning Dutch makes a big difference in daily life. While most Dutch people can speak English, it doesn’t necessarily mean they prefer to—especially in professional or social settings.
So, for visitors, English is more than enough. But for those planning to settle down, picking up some Dutch is definitely a smart move.
Cannabis in the Netherlands: Decriminalized, Not Legalized
When people think of the Netherlands, cannabis often comes to mind. But contrary to popular belief, cannabis is not fully legalized here. Instead, the country adopts a tolerant, decriminalized approach. You can’t buy cannabis just anywhere—it’s only available in licensed establishments, and in limited quantities.
For most tourists, the go-to spot is the coffeeshop (which, despite the name, is where cannabis is sold). Be careful not to confuse it with a café, which is an actual coffee shop!
On this trip, our itinerary was packed, so I didn’t get a chance to try a space cake (cannabis-infused cake). Maybe next time! A Dutch friend did mention that if you try one, make sure it has butter in it—that’s what gives you the signature “floaty” feeling. (Raises eyebrow)
One important tip: many first-time users say they “don’t feel anything” at first. That’s normal—it can take 30 minutes to 2 hours for the effects to kick in. But don’t assume it’s not working and eat more! That’s how things get out of hand. I’ve even heard of people passing out and needing to be carried back to their hotel. Not exactly the memory you want from your trip.
If you’re curious to learn more about cannabis culture, check out the Cannabis Museum in Amsterdam’s Red Light District—it offers a deeper look into the history, science, and social perspective behind this misunderstood plant.
The Red Light District: A Historic and Legalized Part of Dutch Culture
The Netherlands has long been recognized as a pioneer in the legal protection and rights of sex workers. In fact, the origins of Amsterdam’s Red Light District—De Wallen—can be traced all the way back to the 14th century, when the area began serving the needs of sailors arriving at the port.
Fast forward to the year 2000, and the Netherlands officially legalized sex work, granting it full legal recognition and regulation. This progressive step not only made the Red Light District fully legal but also helped ensure better working conditions, health standards, and safety for those in the profession.
Far beyond its provocative image, the Red Light District is also a place of historical depth, cultural debate, and urban resilience—an integral part of Amsterdam’s story.

Tulips and the Netherlands
It may come as a surprise, but the true origin of the tulip lies not in Europe, but in the remote Tien Shan Mountains of Central Asia. The flower later caught the attention of the Ottoman Empire, where it was first cultivated in the gardens of Istanbul.
Yet today, tulips are almost synonymous with the Netherlands — an inseparable duo in the minds of many. In fact, the very first tulip bulb arrived in the Netherlands in 1593, imported directly from Turkey. By 1637, this humble flower had sparked “Tulip Mania,” the world’s first recorded economic bubble.
The tulip’s journey from mountain wildflower to Dutch icon is a fascinating blend of culture, trade, and history — and it continues to bloom as a powerful symbol of beauty and tourism.

King’s Day in the Netherlands
Every year on April 27, the Netherlands erupts into a sea of orange to celebrate King’s Day — the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. From 1890 to 2013, it was known as Queen’s Day, honoring a line of female monarchs. Today, it’s one of the most vibrant and joyful national celebrations in Europe.
On this day, the entire country turns orange — the national color — as people take to the streets, parks, and canals for an all-out festive party. Music, dancing, parades, and a contagious sense of fun fill the air.
But beyond the festivities, there’s a charming and meaningful tradition: the vrijmarkt, or open-air second-hand market. Families and children set up stalls to sell pre-loved items — anything from toys to books to household goods. It’s more than just a market; it’s a hands-on way to teach kids entrepreneurship, communication, and confidence.
During our visit, we explored a small market along the harbor where local families gathered. Children proudly manned their little booths, negotiating prices and making change. We even brought home a few lovely tablecloths as souvenirs — a reminder of the warm spirit and creativity of the Dutch people.
Postcards from the Netherlands
Sending postcards is one of the most charming ways to remember a trip — and the Netherlands offers no shortage of places to pick them up. We found ourselves collecting postcards throughout our journey: two rather quirky (and honestly, not-so-pretty) ones in Giethoorn for €1.20, three from a museum in Amsterdam for €3, and five beautifully designed ones at the Van Gogh Museum for €5. Stamps cost us €7 in total.
We wrote quite a few cards during our stay, each one a little love note from the Netherlands. Just before leaving, we finally spotted a mailbox at the airport and sent them off.
Thanks to direct flights between the Netherlands and Taiwan, those postcards made their way home in just a few days — a lovely surprise waiting in the mailbox after our return.
